I have a strange theory (not really a theory since I have no evidence) that Jay Gatsby planned to have Nick move into his house next door. The only real “Evidence” I have is that Gatsby could have had some control over his $80 a month rent. Like how did nobody move into that cottage before Nick??? It was in one of the nicest areas and was pretty affordable! I know that was wordy but bear with me I just put this together 😭

Edit: also you don’t think super stalker Gatsby wouldn’t have had some clue that a relative of Daisy was living in New York.

I would argue that it’s more likely that Gatsby is just a creative extension of Nick—his creation of what he wants to be (they’re the same age).

You’re not the only one! My English teacher in high school actually figured this was the case.

Gatsby definitely plotted and planned for Daisy’s cousin, Nick to live there. He already bought an expensive mansion right across the water from Daisy’s so he could stare in her general direction at night. Gatsby was obsessed and would have done anything to gain favor with Daisy.

I think you’re onto something. ($80 in 1920s money to today is about $1,230- still great price for waterfront!)
