I forgot how good his prose is. I’m not usually taken by that kind of thing. I read a lot of books with dragons and spaceships on the cover, but his similes and metaphors are so elegant and concise that every time they come up, I think, ‘Goddamn, I wish I could describe something one-tenth as well as that.’ I haven’t finished yet, but it’s also a fun story about how a fae keeps themselves occupied in the mortal world while they’re supposed to be laying low
His prose being so good is what makes it hard for me to read other fantasy authors.
They just don’t feel as “fantasy” as Rothfuss. I’ve tried multiple times to get into Brandon Sanderson, but it just reads so dry and artlessly in comparison, like it’s not fantasy at all.
Pratchett also had excellent prose that he used expertly mixed in with more standard writing to really emphasize the fantastic moments of his books that really were about the mix of magic in mundane life. Unfortunately, he’s long passed. GNU Terry Pratchett.
Neil Gaiman also has excellent fantasy prose.
Scott Lynch is pretty good too…
I’ve only read her science fiction but I know Anne Lecklie’s also written fantasy so I want to read that to see how it is.
If anyone knows any other fantasy author’s with excellent prose please let me know.
Guy Gavriel Kay
Lord Dunsany. I rest my case.
Brandon Sanderson is so mediocre. I’m glad someone here has sense.
lmao this sub is constantly hating on Sanderson, and how dare people enjoy his books. We only read GOOD fantasy here.
Robin Hobb
I’ve heard some of Robin Hobb. I’ll check it out.
Robin Hobb might be the most well-rounded fantasy author out there.
There isn’t a single technical aspect of writing she isn’t fantastic at. And her character work is arguably the best in the genre.
Although, like many writers of great characters, her novels are extremely depressing.
Try China Mieville. Specifically, the Scar. The introduction alone is some of the best writing I’ve seen.
