If you’re anything like me, you probably read a lot of books and forget a lot about them as well after reading them (also see: being ADHD)
Is there one specific book whose plot, characters, setting you just can’t get out of your mind and still think about today even when in the midst of another book?
For me, it’s 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I think due to the sheer volume of this book (clocked in over 1000 pages) I was so invested in Tengo and Aomame’s stories that it’s quite impossible to forget them quickly. This is also why I prefer long novels, because they stick around in my memory for longer!
So what book is still stuck with you?
All the Light we cannot see
I think if it had ended at the flag scene, it would have been perfection. I understand wanting to do the after effects but it felt rushed.
Oh, interesting. I could see that. I think the ending bits were some of the more interesting to me, but interesting to me because they were so mundane. We know that Nazis and collaborators escaped and/or were allowed to live their ordinary lives in obscurity. We know that families carried shame and trauma for decades.
One of the most impactful but tiny bits for me was how a love can mean so much to one person (because their life was so short) and to another, it was only a memory because they had a full, rich, varied and long life. That stuck with me, how memories and feelings can be so static and fluid at the same time.
I read this when it first came out, and thought it was one of the most beautiful and perfect books I’ve ever read. I think it’s time for me to have a reread :)
I still get goosebumps when I think of this book. Marie on the beach for the first time… just stunningly written. It is one absolutely gorgeous book. I echo the sentiments of others who are afraid to watch the series because there’s no way it can hold up! Have heard good things from people who haven’t read the book, so I’m curious.
