Hi! I am about to start reading A Little Life. I’ve bought it recently and I’ve been preparing to read it. I never annotate a book when I read, I prefer to focus on the story and the book itself rather than analyzing it and thinking about it, it makes me lose concentration. BUT, I’ve seen that in this particular case, a lot of people do annotate. And I wanted to ask anyone who has read it already if I should try doing it or just sticking to my usual style. I’ve read that it’s a heavy and slow book at first, but maybe I’m worrying too much?
Thx for the help!

as someone who annotates, don’t annotate a book just because everyone else is doing it. there’s a bunch of ways to do it and you’ll end up worsening your experience if you don’t know what you wanna do. you can always write up notes/highlight if you change your mind, but it’s almost never necessary to annotate to enjoy a book.

Never annotated a book in my life. If I read something that is thought provoking I pause, stare at the wall, think it about until I snap out of it and continue reading. I’ve done my note taking and studying in formal education; sitting there with a pen and a fiction novel would ruin it for me.

That book absolutely shattered me. Not in a “omg I, loved that book” it was just dark and got darker with every page. It was depressing
