Is there any book that is considered a classic or regularly shows up on the “100 books to read before you die” lists and such, you had high expectations before reading and then you ended up absolutey detesting?
For me it’s Blindness by José Saramago, it started off good and then page after page it was becoming more unbearable for me to read, I hated the characters, the things they were doing and the conclusions of the book. I was really disappointed because the plot seemed really good and all I ended up with was frustration.
Is there a book that did the same to you?
The Great Gatsby is a boring, mean spirited book about boring, mean spirited people and has no sympathetic characters or real reason for existing. We already know rich people suck, I don’t need six weeks of my life in high school talking about this total trashfest and neither does anyone else.
The movie was even worse.
This is how I feel about White Lotus. Somehow powered through season 1, not watching season 2.
In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, he told me, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.
Starting a book with the literary equivalent of a narcissist love bomb doesn’t excuse the war crime of bad writing, bad characters, terrible setting, and boring story that follows.
I’m curious as to how the passage I posted is narcissistic or a love bomb. Care to expound?
Agreed. Like Daisy is the personification for every spoiled bitch Ive ever met, and Gatsby is an ever bigger fool for pursuing her, the idea of her, her status. She is a pathetic cheater, shitty mother, and a doormat to her worse husband
I love this book but I feel like if I’d been made to read it in school, I would have hated it
