the literary equivalent of a narcissist love bomb

I’m curious as to how the passage I posted is narcissistic or a love bomb. Care to expound?

Why would they do that? I can’t imagine requiring The Road. Damn.

Portrait of an Artist is fairly conventional in a way, much like Picasso’s early work. Not an endorsement for you to read it mind you, just stating that not everything the man wrote was willfully inscrutable.
