My worst example was the word GIF pronounced like the peanut butter instead of properly as in Graphical. It’s worse because Amanda Montell was writing a linguistics book about the history of language and words.
Recent example was “eschew” which is pronounced Eh-shoo but the narrator said “Eskew” and it confused me so much I had to Google it to make sure I hadn’t been saying it wrong my whole life. What exmaples have you found?
My name. I’m called Calla after the Calla lily, which is pronounced CAH-luh. Read a book where the narrator kept saying it CAW-luh. Ig who’s to say how a name “should be” pronounced, but every other Calla I’ve met in real life says it like the lily.
In the Philippines, we pronounce it, similar to the Spanish, with a Y sound but retaining the L. So Kal - ya. I think in Spain they say Ka - Ya. It’s really amazing how regional some of these pronunciations are. Haha
