So I finished, fourth wing last night and I’m totally disappointed, it’s the worst book I’ve read this year and one of the worst I’ve read in recent times, I read so many positive reviews about it that I expected a totally incredible story, nothing in the book works, the writing almost amateur( Wattapp says Hello!) character without personality, repetitive plot( I got sick of reading Violeta saying so much: I’m smaller and Brittle than everyone else) the feeling I had was that Rebecca Yarros intended to write a YA, but then because she wanted to write adult scenes (laughable by the way) changed the age of the characters to over twenty, without changing anything in the plot, all their attitudes and everything they do is as if they were 15 year old teenagers, nothing is original, the academy part sounds like a bad copy of Sabaa Tahir’s The Ember in the Ashes (it’s actually a great example of a well-written fantasy series), the dragons are a duller version of How to Train Your Dragon, the romance part is so childish and shameful, and the plot twist at the end was obvious from the beginning I know that most people loved the book and I respect that, but I would like to know if anyone else has a similar opinion.
See, I have a problem with this book - I went into it expecting bad YA, Twilight x Divergent x every other book using the same trope and I loved it. It was exectly as easy, cheesy, fanfiction-y as I wanted it to be and that’s why, when I think in these categories, it’s 4/5 stars from me.
But when I think of it as a book that was supposed to be good and serious, then it’s a complete flop. The writing is so bad, characters are shallow, you can predict every single thing and god, the romance and arguments between main characters are so repetitive.
It’s like when you don’t know what to do, you’re feeling down and put on some really bad movie - it’s terrible but exactly what you need and that’s why, in that moment it’s good.
I couldn’t agree more with this. It’s mindless and kind of fun so that’s what makes it appealing.
I literally loved it because it was an easy read. I’m not critiquing this from a literary stand point when I’m reading it and it’s not going to be the fantasy read of the century it however has made for some theorizing and internet memes and I appreciate that.
I mean YA doesn’t have to be bad. A lot of it is, but before YA became a publishing juggernaut there were some really great books, even works of literature squarely aimed at the teen market.
This book should not be aimed at the teen market with some of it’s scenes, but young adult for sure…over 18 for sure. I could see a parent letting their 14 year old read this and instantly regret it, but then again I’ve seen parents let their kid read Colleen Hoover books.
