In hank after dark, was Bojack deliberately taking attention from Diane to himself when diane calls out hank, because he didn’t like attention being diverted away from him, or was he genuinely trying to protect Diane?

No he genuinely did care about his friend and defended her. But in the beginning it was about his ego and getting attention
