“The Road” by Cormac McCarthy held me captive, staying up all night immersed in its pages, awakening the next morning with a lingering sense of melancholy. Stephen King’s works, especially “The Shining,” share that unique ability to make you eagerly anticipate the next page, constantly wondering what twist awaits.

It has been 10 years since I’ve read it so I can’t remember exactly what drew me in so much. I think mostly the fact that it mostly takes place within the wall of one old New Orleans mansion, and I’ve always had a fascination of old houses and the energy and history contained within. In some ways the house is a living, breathing character in its own right. Plus I just find the lore of witches more interesting than vampire lore
