Only took a few years, but I finally get the joke. When fisherman catch a fish, they pose with their thumbs up showing off the catch.
I thought it was because it was a reference on how that same gesture is offensive in some Middle East countries(It’s the equivalent of a middle finger)
It also used to be the signal to kill in the gladiator ring. Thumbs down actually meant to sheath or put the sword into the sand.
I heard it in some countries that it means up one’s ass
Ohhhhh
Lol I just watched this episode today
W H A T
😱THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE😱
I thought it was because in some cultures it is the same thing as the middle finger, I’m not sure what region but growing up my grandfather worked at Disneyland and said that the employees can’t use certain hand gestures because of people coming from other countries.
But… there doesn’t need to be a reason? It’s like a hindu person that is completely ignorant of europe’s history goes to germany and shows off a swastika, despite being told ‘don’t do that’.
The reason why the thumbs up is offensive is not the point, bojack doing it despite being told it is offensive is another way the show is telling us ‘Bojack is a selfish person, don’t imitate him’.
What do fisherwomen do? Is it also offensive?
How long till we call them all fishers? I have so many questions!
It’s also offensive to crocodiles, mate!
I always looked at it as “get hooked” in the same context of the middle finger being “get fucked”
lmao this is amazing and I now refuse to believe it means anything else.
“This is way worse than what I did.”

ohhhh haha I never realised that
👍🏻
What the hell is wrong with you
Thumbs up is the equivalent of the middle finger in Japan; the underwater city was fish Tokyo
Not true about Japan, not sure where you got that info
Oh I thought it was like a sign saying “shove a thumb up your ass” or something like that
yeah I imagined it like this too, except ass was blowhole lol (but the scuba diving answer that people are posting in the comments ultimately makes the most sense now, which is neat)
