Spoiler for like, any book existing.

I think mine has to be the villain in Mirror Man. Idk, he wasn’t intimidating, he wasn’t interesting. He was meh.

Also the villains from The Chain. Dear God they weren’t sympathetic in the slightest. The book tries to act like they were atleast pitiful but FROM THEIR INCEPTION, they were just evil assholes who enjoyed causing pain. The book itself wasn’t all that great anyways.

Obviously Cathy Ames should be on this list somewhere. The first paragraph about her goes on and on about how she is a monstrous person without any capacity for good in her. I would love to hear others talk about why Cal shouldn’t be on this list.

I don’t understand the love for this book. She’s the most interesting character, but through her character the whole book seems so misogynistic. I love Steinbeck, but this one really didn’t connect with me. The Grapes of Wrath is 1000x times better imo.

My thoughts exactly. Cathy had very few choices in life, and it seemed to me that she just wanted to be left alone (and to a be a dominatrix, which Steinbeck seems to think is the epitome of evil, lol). The part where he writes that Cathy, as a ten year old girl “seduces” TWO fourteen year old boys is disgusting. He really writes the boys as the victims in that situation. I almost stopped reading the book at that point because I knew anything else he wrote about Cathy was going to be through the lens of a pedo apologist.
