Very offtopic, but never had the chance to ask: does being dyslexic also make using spelling/grammar checkers hard? I am very curious about this as I would assume it could be a great life improvement.

    Also, similarly, how are audiobooks?

does being dyslexic also make using spelling/grammar checkers hard?

Not OP, but In short, yes. Often, misspellings are so far off that they don’t really help much.

I was diagnosed before there was ever even such a thing as a word processor, so I had to develop a very tedious but functional hands-on toolbox that included things like paper with holes cut in it to remove distractions, writing with different colors, and using manual typewriters.

Once word processors and computers became available, I thought I was saved. But it actually set me back pretty far, because I built an overdependence on it. I was using the suggestion without double checking the word. My university papers turned into unintelligible gobbledegook.

I had to rework my entire dyslexia toolbox from scratch.

Learning to touch type so I can write with my eyes closed helps.

I use a thesaurus to check spelling.

With it, I can look up a simple, but related word, and look through the synonyms to find the correct word.

Reading faster just took time and patience.

I’m still slower than average, but I can read okay now.

Don’t try to push yourself too hard, because getting frustrated just makes things worse.

Keep practicing and building your toolbox.

Thank you, but it’s taken a lot of frustrating work and time. OP seems to be just beginning the journey.
