I’ll go with the low-hanging fruit: Mein Kampf. I’ve read it, cover to cover. As a piece of propaganda, it’s good. As an example of good writing? Absolutely not (though I will admit I have only read it in translation). Oh, and the whole fascist, racist, and generally shitty worldview of the author that he infuses into the text. And the fact that the author is literally Hitler. You 5-star that book? You’re a Nazi. Period. And as a Jewish person, I don’t look too kindly on them.
American Psycho / Lolita / anything of the sort. They might be recognisable as good pieces of fiction but someone who really really enjoys those type of books probably wouldn’t have any interests in common with me. Also maybe Atomic Habits because sometimes I like to be lazy
What factors are you using to group together American Psycho and Lolita? Just having protagonists that are horrible people?
I still haven’t read the former, but from having watched the movie and read discussions about the book, it doesn’t seem to have a whole lot in common with Lolita.
Yeah, just very dark and twisted main characters - I know I probably should expand my taste a little but to me there’s nothing appealing about essentially being inside the mind of horrible people who do horrible things. When I have read similar books they make me feel very icky
You’re getting downvoted, but I agree because I would assume anyone who puts Lolita or American Psycho as their favorite book in a dating profile is trying to be edgy, and I’m not here for it.
Lol. If you can’t enjoy Lolita for the masterwork it is just because the main character is a POS, I wouldn’t want to date you.
