You wanted to read the book, you were excited to crack it open, you came into it with good faith and anticipation… but you ended up dnf-ing it. Which book and why?

Mine was The Maid by Nita Prose. It was for my book club and looked like a fun murder mystery. Instead I got instant manic-pixie-dream-neurodivergent-girl vibes, and I noped out before the crime scene was even found.

Dnfd Throne of Glass after about 30 pages. The overall writing style and constant descriptions of how hot everyone is just wasn’t for me

I will say the general consensus is the first book is the “worst” and it changes quite a bit for the better. (She was very young writing the first book — like a teenager) I know life is too short to read books you don’t enjoy, but just wanted to share that :)

Writing definitely got better but it just never felt like it was going to get to a place that I vibed with. DNF’d midway through book 3

OTOH my wife loves everything Maas

Her writing is noticeably better a few books in. I’m rereading the whole shebang in preparation for CC3, and I’m just reading these first few books as quickly as possible.

Oh God yessss. I hate hate hate when the author just goes on and on because every damn person in the book is ofc drop dead gorgeous. Bonus cringe for using the same tired phrases like “sex on a stick”.

For me, I just hated the MC. So unbelievable and just plain bad. :/

I love Acotar and Crescent City and in general SJM, but I couldn’t get through Throne of Glass either.

I hated this book so much. I ended up reading the next two, and just couldn’t keep going.

I DNF’d after she killed someone and I didn’t care at all. Then I picked up a YA SciFi and read it in one day.

Yes! I couldn’t get over how she was apparently an amazing assassin but thought (and acted) like an idiot. The two didn’t mesh for me.
