Look, having been through the comics myself, I can agree that the shows adaptation isn’t faultless, but it’s a shame seeing how so much of the discourse this week is about the complaints people have for the way things have been delivered with the show this season.

No shade, but I hope the comic folks having a bad time at the moment learn to let go and just enjoy the show for what it is. Great casting, faithful recreation of the OG story- We’re so much luckier than the vast majority of comics fans getting the adaptation we are.

Peace and love, bring on the downvotes I guess 😅

Funny, I prefer the show overall. It has done a much better job developing characters like Debbie and making Mark more empathic. It has better pacing, lots of stuff that the comic rushed through in a page or two (like Omniman attacking the original Guardians), the show devotes several minutes to. Overall, the show has a somewhat more mature vibe to it, while the comic is more, well, cartoonish.

I’m looking forward to seeing how they adapt what’s to come. Honestly, the comic is not perfect. Some of its content skews towards cheesy and trite. I’m hoping for a few more significant deviations.

I agree. I’ve read the comics twice now, and I’m really enjoying seeing Kirkman tweak his work in new ways. The show feels a little more thoughtful so far in regards to the depth of each character.

I feel like the problem is that it can cause later events to not make sense if they decide to go with it.

It also removes a bit of Mark’s character to have him genuinely be a hero.

I personally loved how much more development they gave to mark and his father before their big fight in the show compared to the comic. They let the relationship grow and that made the betrayal more shocking and meaningful.

This sub hates anyone with an opinion. I love season 1 but honestly season 2 is a huge let down so far. Go ahead, fanboys, prove me right

Yeah no. If the show gets well adapted then it deserves praise for being well adapted and no one says shit.

But if part of it is badly adapted then it deserves to be called out and criticized for what it is. If you disagree then disagree but this “let go and enjoy” bs is just gatekeeping.

How about you “let go” and let people enjoy things their own way.

Haven’t noticed much of that attitude tbh. If anything I’ve seen a lot of comic readers saying the cartoon is even better in certain areas.

Oh yeah, God forbid fans voice their opinions, but only if they’re negative, am I right?

“Don’t criticize, just consume product then get excited for next product”.

Season 1 I thought was a nice improvement over the comics. Botched Amber a little but otherwise definitely a net positive. Season 2 has also been mostly better, Amber has been improved a lot and I like some of the changes they’ve made, including some of the more controversial ones (Lucan design, most of the changes to power levels), really it’s just this most recent episode that I think missed the mark a little. Would’ve liked to see more of the cut Thraxa content, especially the chase, but I really enjoyed the new stuff too, like Donald’s scenes and Debbie and Nolan both being depressed. Eve’s fight was nice too.

As an adaption I’m really enjoying it. As someone who’s had ti watch season 8 got diminish a great show and rings of power drastically change the story from the books I’m happy we’re getting majorly faithful shows.

Animation is great, parts could be better but that’s always the case.

Some parts of the story are even better in the show too. Derby for example

I get the sentiment but disagree overall. It’s our obligation to hold Amazon accountable when they clearly cut corners and prioritize the wrong things for profit. I don’t blame Kirkman for any of the flaws, I blame Amazon since they’re responsible for budgeting. And as we all know, they have plenty of money. If they wanted to they could make an 8 episode season entirely in Across the Spider-Verse animation style and it’d barely make a dent in their pocket. I also imagine they’re largely responsible for the skipping around and shortening of comic arcs, also likely due to a desire to spend less.

But the criticism aimed towards episode 4 isn’t solely about how faithful it’s being to the comics or whether or not a scene got adapted. While not everything has to put under a critical lens by fans, the people taking issue with the pacing and animation quality are coming from show onlies AND those who have read ahead so it’s not just elites saying these things in the sub. And you know what those complaints are completely valid. There’s nothing wrong with constructive criticism towards the show (also including the comic), and so far the complaints for it have been on the calmer side of the shitstorm scale compared to other fandoms I took part in. Like people still want the Donald, Eve, Mauler stuff but the way it’s placed throughout the current ep lessened interest for it, and that’s solely to be judged as a show thing not a comic only thing.

I gotta be honest I see more of a problem in the “Don’t think, just enjoy” outlook for things, which is completely fine for you personally but not for every fan to adopt like you said. Audiences are allowed to constructively criticize the work wherever they find lacking and temper it with their praise or excitement for everything else. Leads to interesting discussions and all that for the events and changes to come.

This is also slightly off topic but I don’t like how “you all complain too much” is being thrown around. It comes off as gatekeepy to me.

I generally have liked the changes from the comic so far. Fleshing out some characters, re-pacing and reorganizing arcs, some character changes, etc. I also think how they’ve approached the violence works well. Gore was introduced much earlier to set the tone, but has been toned down in some places where I think it would’ve gotten in the way. It would’ve been expensive to animate for minimal impact and probably visually confusing in animation. It’s not like we didn’t get extreme violence considering the evisceration and the obliterated jaw.

One particular character I think is greatly improved is William. I hadn’t read the comics until after watching Season 1 and his portrayal through half the series as an annoying, misogynistic, homophobic, dude-bro that fairly suddenly comes out as gay later felt really jarring and dated. It was very early-2000’s stuff and made him really unlikable for me. Having him gay from the start while still being a generally obnoxious person works better for me.

IMO if you want it 100% accurate to the comics, then just go read the comics. It’s an adaptation, it’s going to be different and a lot of the changes they have made were actually improvements. I have enjoyed each episode.
