So this is a serious question that is related to this show.

I’ve never watched the show, but a friend brought it up to me when I told them I had met someone while I was traveling and really hit it off, so I was going to go back and visit them again for a bit longer to see how things go. They excitedly laughed and said that it sounded like “a real life 90 Day Fiance” situation.

The friend explained the basic premise of this show, and said they were excited for me to see what happened. I felt a little weird about the comment, but took it in stride, since this was the first person in a long time I had been excited over.

I just randomly came across this sub and… it seems like this show is somewhat mean-spirited, in that’s it’s kind of making fun of people who are doing outrageous and outlandish types of behaviors on the fringe of societal acceptability. One comment on here said “they are not our best and brightest.”

Was this friend actually insulting me with that comment? I had weird feelings about it, but kept brushing it off as overthinking. But now, I’m really not sure anymore. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like all you are lacking to qualify for the show is drama. Enjoy the possibility of finding someone. You are not like 90day couples

I don’t think it’s an insult at all. It sounds like she was just referring to the premise of the show and relating it to your relationship

No, not an insult. 40 years ago I knew a girl who was 400 lbs, finding no one in the US and met a guy in Ireland, she was a lawyer and he was a–odd jobs/construction, and she brought him here and they have been married and have kids who are adults and they have a happy life. She had gastric bypass when they first came out, lost alot of weight, wanted to cheat on him and live the life she never had; but I convinced to not do that, she gained all the weight (and more) back and then had a lap band and now settled into a good weight for her, maybe 200 lbs. It all happened before 90 day but if it happened now, it would be referenced for certain along with maybe a few more ‘shows’ that I can think of at the moment. :) but not an insult to you, be happy!

I think people who watch the show, whenever they see an American-foreigner pairing, they’re going to think of 90DF, since that’s the premise of 90DF. It probably doesn’t mean anything beyond that.

I was a real life 90 day fiancé 😀 the show is heavily produced to have drama and they mostly show some fucked up couples who dont get to know each other properly before filing for their fiancé visas. But dont think much into what your friend said. There is nothing wrong with long distance relationships and i met my now husband due to traveling. I always laugh and joke about being a 90 day fiancé. So go explore and see where the relationship might take you.

No. There’s just a lot of influencer wannabes that are clout chasing. There’s also an audience that likes trashy reality TV in general, alongside an audience that have been or are in that situation (myself lol) and enjoy seeing other couples navigate a similar situation.

So you’re seeing a mixed crowd and also a mixed cast, where some couples are garbage people and some are very lovely and inspiring. It wasn’t an insult lol.

While the modern iteration of the show is mostly caricatures of insane personality disorders, there are also real, in love couples on the show and always have been. The joke your friend made was merely based on two people from different countries possibly falling in love. I wouldn’t take it in a mean way.

No not an insult. I have a friend who met someone on instagram from another country and flew over to his country to meet him and now they are married with a baby. I was very excited for her but also told her she should apply for the show and I could be the supportive friend in the interviews.

It’s more just relating to the situation. They are finally moving back to the US soon once his visa is approved and we are so excited!

Its TV, of course they’re going showcase the weirdo couples. People marry foreigners all the time. Not a dig at you at all, just an observation.

There are bad eggs in every community. Ignore it and just do whatever makes you happy.

It’s a great show, maybe watch a few episodes and you’ll see pretty quick what your friend is referring to. Please keep in mind that 90 Day Fiancé is a reality tv show, people apply to it or producers find people they think would make good tv. That means it’s not normal people because in my opinion what I consider normal is not going on a reality tv show, especially a dating one. So are the people on the show a good depiction of long-distance couples? I have no idea, but I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Also, watch the show. Especially if you have a potential love match in another area.

It’s only 90 Day Fiance if the american can’t find a mate in their own country and has to scour the third world for someone desperate enough to marry a bridge troll in their quest to harvest the american dollar. Hope that clears it up.

I think if it’s a friend and they were joking then no. There’s actually been some sane ppl on this show- not many but some. I think the show title is a term used from the visa process
