or that you found most interesting? Were there events you preferred the comics version of to the show version? What didn’t you like (especially if this is your first comic)

Anything in particular you are looking forward to the show to adapting in future seasons?

One thing I think the show did better was the female cast, I noticed in the original comic most of the women don’t have a lot of agency early, they kind of revolve around the guys a lot, like most of Eve’s decisions are pretty much about Mark, like she dates Will to be closer to him and she ends up going to Africa cause she’s upset she can’t be with Mark too. Where in the show they ditch the Will and Eve romance, and they also just have her decide to leave on her own. Debbie has more agency early on, though I do wonder how it’s going to work later, cause in the comic the point was her going from a housewife to having her own life with Nolan being gone. Before that’s kind of dropped because she has to raise Oliver and then eventually just gets back with Nolan, so I do wonder how they’ll handle that.

If I had some issues though it’d Mark and Nolan, which might be a hot take, I think they made Nolan too evil, to the point where he’s irredeemable than he is in the comic, which is make his eventual redemption even more, and it already was kinda off in the comic. Like he’s really aggressive and kind of a total nutcase even before beating up Mark, when in the comic he was pretty chill, and during their fight he also goes out of his way to kill people, when in the comic it was just collateral damage, which didn’t necessarily make it ok but ya know the train scene didn’t exist there. I also though Mark got the shit kicked out of him too much, don’t get me wrong he gets his shit kicked in a lot in the comic too but in the show it felt like he almost never really won, and having him get his ass kicked by Battle Beast and then immediately after getting the shit kicked out of him by his dad kinda lessened the impact, where in the comics, at least for the issues the show adapted he won most fights pretty easily until his dad.

i mean, “comic relief” is a purpose of a sort. i guess

but yes i’m glad while still a subject of mocking, he’s actually at least somewhat competent in the show

Changes to the timeline and reveal of information. The show had a fun build up and mystery over who killed who and what was going on. The comic was a lot more blatant.

I also think the comic handles the violence and gore better - but that might be that I just find the still image without sound easier to swallow.

I also found that I dislike show Amber because of her know-it-all-attitude, but I also dislike comics Amber because she’s a chunk of cardboard.

Tbh, Eve and William dating. Just surprised me. Also, I liked the bit of William asking everyone to fly and them always saying it’s gay.

The show is so much better up to issue 13. The decision to end episode 1 with the slaughter and then keep the secret from the characters until the end of season 1 was absolutely genius. The pacing is also way better than the comics. The inclusion of more Damien Darkblood and the development of more side characters helps in that regard. The benefit of hindsight, I guess.

Comic Amber is forgettable. It’s super obvious that they were going to pivot to Eve. It was a relief when they finally got it over with. The teasing was annoying. Show Amber is more interesting as a character, but she’s also not the most likable. “I always knew you were a superhero.” Bitch, what? Then why keep playing with Mark? Just dump him if he’s too absent or tell him you know and accept his lifestyle. Not a fan of that whole deal.

omni-man is way more sadistic and brutal in the cartoon than in the comic. yeah, he kills the guardians and beats up Mark in both, but they’re much less bloody and vicious in the comic. and then during the big fight between him and Mark at the end, in the comic, innocents are dying offscreen as collateral damage. but in the cartoon, we watch as he messily, deliberately kills people. i kind of understand - you want to make something as big and gory as possible for the spectacle for your tv show - but it does seem like it’s going to be a big hurdle for selling his redemption arc later.

I was so shocked they even tried in the books. I remember when that started becoming clear that’s where we were going I did not believe I would ever buy into it

and while I certainly understand your point, what he did in and of itself in the books was so heinous I was ready to never forgive him and I don’t think I ever really did. I accepted giving him a second chance, but I would’ve been like the rest of earth. Probably better if you stay up on the moon there buddy.

I didn’t know how spoiled I was to have gay William from the beginning. Straight William is so annoying every time he was around he was just an asshole. I know that’s probably because he was lashing out because he was struggling with the fact that he’s gay and has to come out and hope that people accept him but holy shit it got so much better after he came out.

Bring various things forward, the Omni-Man heel turn, and Robot’s clone body. But both work better than the comic actually
