  • The ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture by Amos Root. I’m not a beekeeper, but I’m fascinated by all things bee. This book has interesting information for keepers and all sorts of facts about bees.

News And Rumor In Renaissance Europe: The Fugger Newsletters. The Fuggers ran an international banking organization, one of the earliest. They required their agents to send back regular reports about things happening where they were stationed. This selection contains everything from a first-hand account of the Great Lisbon Earthquake, a description of a 10 day feast by one of the Ottoman royalty, to the story of a local church play where the person playing Jesus had stolen something and was betrayed to the authorities by the person playing Judas. The past is far stranger then most people know.

  • Catch-22. Read it for the first time when I was about 10. Didn’t understand it all, of course, but found it very funny. Yossarrian reminded me of Bugs Bunny. Read it every year for the next decade or so and it became less funny each time.

Yossarrian lives in a world which doesn’t make sense, but people in authority want him to believe it does. They don’t know how to handle his refusal/inability to not point out the irrationality of everything. He reacts to the world that is, the satone other people know exists but want him to pretend doesn’t. This is exactly what Bugs Bunny does.
