The Wager fits the bill!
The Wager fits the bill!
Totally. But everything else Ted Chiang has written is brilliant.
This is pretty cool.
Like a wool sweater gets pilly?
I think this is a little different because it’s part of the character and done on purpose. It wasn’t like Fitzgerald was obsessed with calling people old sport and had everyone call each other that like he was trying to make fetch happen.
The most recent one I’ve heard of was Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.
I think novelizations have the potential to be cool, but the few that I have read felt kind of soulless. They just describe what was on the screen.
I like the cover design.
One Moby Dick and one Goosebumps would average out to two decent sized books.
I think the data would be pretty interesting even if the length of books vary.
Has this sub ever done a survey about how many books we all read? Would be interesting to see the data.
I have no idea how some people read 50-100 a year unless you’re counting audio books.
I read significantly faster than a narrator narrates an audiobook.
Being able to read 50-100 books is more about how much free time you have than anything.
And you spent the time consuming the story.
If I was asked on a survey how any books I read this year, I would absolutely include audiobooks. A good survey would go that extra step and ask how any audiobooks and how many physical books. Without that differentiation, audiobooks count.
I was curious how I would answer if I was ever asked this on a survey. I am shocked to say I read more than 30 books this year! Not including short stories or children’s books. I thought it would be like 15.
So I would definitely skew the average up!
I think a lot of people don’t read at all. And that’s sad because I think they’re missing out.
I tend to read more fiction. It engages me more for whatever reason.
I do try to read non-fiction too. I really appreciate well researched books. I’m not always in the mood for them.
I try not to force myself to read anything I’m not very interested in at the moment. If that means my fiction:non-fiction ratio is unbalanced, so be it. I don’t think about reading in terms like that anyway.
Can you add some context for those of us who don’t know what this is about?
Nope. Sometimes I am okay with just reading the first one.
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende comes to mind!
Contrary to the title, it doesn’t go on forever.
It’s not insane!
I don’t read aloud to myself, but I don’t consider anyone who does insane. It sounds kind of fun to be honest.
This is not a problem for me because if I allow myself to buy books on any regular basis, I’ll have a million books and likely not read them all. Basically, this would be a problem for me, but I recognize it enough to not let it happen.
For me, I put a lot of things on my wish list/to read eventually list and it just gross and gross because I can only read so fast.
I do think browsing for books is a completely different hobby from reading books, whether you’re bookmarking them or buying them. It’s similar to other hobbies. I live cross stitch and sometimes spend a ton of time browsing patterns, bookmarking the ones I like, making plans in my head to make these things, yet I haven’t picked up a needle in a month or more.
I think we can consider this a side effect of having everything at our fingertips. Everything is available to us and it’s easy to dream that there’s enough time in the world to read all the things and make all the things, but there’s not.
Ha this one got me too!
I kept seeing it and I finally gave in and read it. Did not care for the book at all.
No, never. But if you enjoy doing that while you read, then that’s great! I love the idea in theory, but I just personally would never do that, unless maybe it was an assignment for school.
