1 year agoI just read this as my first Cormac McCarthy and loved it! Not an easy read. My strategy for reading this is that I’d read through a chapter and not care if understood exactly what was going on, but then at the end I’d try to match up the events of what I just read to the “outline” at the start of each chapter and it was kind of fun, to be like oooohhh. There’s one chapter around the halfway point of the book where kid is alone and I feel like everything clicked in that chapter, I understood what was happening, and it was beautiful.
Also, I thought Glanton and the judge were the same person for too long.
I don’t know if it really worked for me, and I wouldn’t say that I was blown away by this book, but a recent novel that used a narrative device that I really thought about is
Trust by Hernan Diaz.
edit: also, if you also read this book and have any thoughts/feelings, I’d love to hear them. None of my friends have read it so I haven’t had anyone to discuss with!
