American Psycho. The movie is excellent. The book is fucking disturbing. Wasn’t prepared for the necrophilia or cannibalism.
I think the movie got it right, just disturbing enough to see how nuts he is, but keeping things in normal horror movie realm.
I’m fairly simple: if I get to the end and I’m sad there’s no more to read, it was one I liked. I’ll probably reread the entire series fr scratch at some point in the next year.
One trilogy I recently read I was happy to get to the end because it looked like they were never going to explain wtf happened in any of the books. Good, it’s done, they don’t explain, I don’t really care. When I looked back, I was mainly reading for an explanation of wtf is going on (it’s a guy existing in 2 different worlds, switching when he goes to sleep), and never got it. I hear there are more books in the series to read but I’m just not a fan after the first 3.
The only real exception was a series by Brent Weeks, which I loved when I first read, but knowing the what and how of the series makes me too sad to reread it and get invested again, because some stories hit you in the gut. I’m hoping one day I forget the ending and can enjoy it from a fresh perspective again.
Don’t hate me… But Tolkien, Lord of the Rings. It’s very flowery with descriptions and nice little poems that I just cannot get into. I guess it doesn’t help that I picture all the characters and locations from the movies, so reading extended descriptions of things I’ve seen feels superfluous.
And the poems, while nice, are distracting from the really interesting stuff and I tend to just gloss over those too.
Then there’s The Silmarilion…
He’s a great author, and quite the poet, but I fell in love with the movies he inspired more than the source books. I think I’ve only read LOTR once or twice so maybe I just need to give it another go…
I get hardcovers of series I really like, otherwise it’s usually paperback.
But I did spend AU$120 to get the last book in a trilogy that had been eluding me. The first two books I got for like $20. Couldn’t find the third anywhere for years. The only option was this omnibus edition with all 3 books, at Au$120 on Amazon.
Glad I got it, I can still see it on Amazon but now for around $300. It’s not a well known trilogy, the Deepwater trilogy by NZ author Ken Catran. I read those books so much as a kid that I just had to read them all again as an adult.
