This is gonna get downvoted to hell but even though I love both, I feel the Kubrick’s The Shining was a significant improvement over the novel. Replacing the hedge animals with the maze, and having the hotel left standing at the end worked a lot better for me than how the novel turned out.
I like to read Nordic crime thrillers, such as Jo Nesbø. Can’t read Norwegian or any other Scandi languages, so it’s translations either in English or Dutch. I picked up a Dutch copy from the library but the translation was so literal which made the Dutch stand out as if it were written a century ago. Dropped it off at the library and downloaded an English version instead. “May the devil take you”, stupid Dutch translation.
Isn’t he quite literally a personification of evil? The opposite of the black woman (forgot her name). Hard to beat that at any rate.
While we’re on Stephen King I’d like to throw in the antagonists from The Institute as well.
Yeah it was a slow process though, word for word, with horrible Dutch pronunciation probably. But still.
I studied Sumerian and Akkadian in uni so it’ll have to be the Gilgamesh epic you mentioned, read in it’s original cuneiform!
