Undertow: Scenes From a Slow Civil War by Jeff Sharlet. Couldn’t even finish it, and that is RARE. Especially since I think this is a really interesting and urgent topic, and all this guy does is sort of waffle around in the annoyingly overwrought antecdotal episodes that feel like a middle schooler trying to hit the minimum word count for an essay. Also, and this is something I don’t think has ever bugged me so viscerally before, he has this really irksome prose style that you can tell hes very impressed with himself for every word he spills onto page.
Such a pointless death too the Gestapo officer shot him because he was personally mad at the other Gestapo officer who liked Schulz artwork and had him paint a mural, because the other officer killed one of his “personal Jews” who was a dentist. Just so stupid.
