to assume it’s a monolith of culture is ridiculous and stupid. for example- there’s over 700 languages spoken in india. imagine how many religious practices exist.
We traveled a small amount but experienced a multitude of languages, religious practices and “norms”. my ex is also Jain (TJs religion) and they absolutely didn’t burn dung or do half the things his family did. it’s not simple to google specific things like that- different communities or families do things differently.
it was TJs responsibility to tell her what she needs to expect and to show her how he expects them to live as a couple.
also, being a tourist is absolutely different than becoming part of a culture via marriage.
if I live somewhere for a year- and get engaged- the person i’m marrying should explain exactly how married life will look for us and what’s expected of me. especially knowing i’m from another culture or religion.
