Yeah, I think another big part of it is that Bojack waited until Herb was literally dying. Herb had it right when he said Bojack was only apologizing for himself, that he just wanted to make himself feel better about things.

The creator of the show wanted to do another season, which was truncated into an elongated season 6. Most of the scenes I want are side-effects of that change.

1. The writers talked about having some episodes focused on Bojack’s relationship to Butterscotch, in the same vein as what they did for Beatrice Horseman. They had to mostly cut it due to time, but I would’ve loved to have a scene giving us an interaction between adult Bojack and his father.
2. I wish we’d gotten another scene of Judah and PB getting together. It wasn’t that I didn’t believe the romance, just that it didn’t feel as well-paced as it could’ve been.
3. Todd could’ve used a bunch of extra time in season 6. His relationship with his family went from them being pretty shitty people to being more misguided than anything else, and I felt like he forgave them a little too easily. Similarly, his relationship with Maude just isn’t fleshed out.

I don’t think s6 was bad, not at all. But knowing what the vision was, I can’t help but feel like we were robbed.

I’ve always imagined him as like, 40 year old attractive. Like, former Friends star energy if that makes sense.

“Frack me Mr. Peanutbutter! FRACK ME!”

I wish I was a fly in the writer’s room wall when they came up with that one.

Diane’s ringtones are references to popular public news sources, specifically NPR. They show a few aspects of her character:

1. She’s keyed in to big news stories, always in the know. As a journalist and something of a ‘righteous activist,’ that’s both a part of her job and also something she probably thinks is her responsibility.

2. NPR is known for in-depth journalism, being publicly funded (and therefore not driven by a standard profit motive), and having an audience mostly made up of well-educated liberals. Specifically the one ringtone I’m most familiar with, Serial, has an entire podcast season dedicated towards one specific court case from twenty years ago. That seems to suggest that Diane favors long-form analysis over 24/7 news cycles.

3. It’s more than a hobby for her. A lot of people listen to NPR, a lot of people enjoy long-form news analysis in general. But not many people would go the extra step of making them into ringtones. We see over the course of the series that Diane has a drive towards activism that can be self-destructive at times. Take her conversation with Cuddly Whiskers:

Diane- “You can’t just disappear! You really hurt a lot of ppl.”

CW- “Sometimes you need to take responsibility for your own happiness.”

D- “Don’t you think that’s a little… selfish?”

CW- “I don’t know what to tell you. I’m happy. For the first time in my life, and i’m not gonna feel bad about it. It takes a long time to see how truly miserable you are, and even longer to see that it doesn’t have to be that way.”

I think the writers of the show very much agree with a lot of Diane’s politics. I think they’re also aware that there are consequences to that path in life, that it can lead to you being burnt out and cynical and feeling like you haven’t done enough.

If I had a nickle for every time someone died accompanying Bojack on a bender, I’d have two nickles. Which isn’t very much but it’s still fucked that it happened twice.
