I wouldn’t say school ruined the book, but in most cases I didn’t enjoy that experience reading it.
I read a lot as a kid, but I really don’t remember anything about most of the books I read for school. I retained what information I needed for the test and then moved on.
I imagine I just approached the task of reading differently knowing I’d be quizzed on it and whatnot. I’ve gone back and read some of the books I read for school and enjoyed them.
I recently read Thunderstruck, also by Larson, and I found it to be much more tense and exciting. I knew nothing about both stories in that book though. I’d read Harold Schecter’s book on Holmes before I read DitWC, so that was likely a factor.
But I recommend Thunderstruck either way.
