It really depends on the book. I’ve listened to some that just didn’t appeal to me, and the only reason they’re not DNF is because I let it play through. But if something catches my ear, or I find myself going “Wait, when did this come up?” I’ll backtrack.
I get your complaint, I really do. But here’s the painful truth: She probably knows people who actually are like that.
So you look that person in the eye, make your own as wide as possible and say “24 year olds read?!”

I can’t guarantee anything for your experience. These are different stories, and they are brought together and it might require a second read-through, when the significance of things will be a little clearer.

Outside of that, it is the concept that works so very well. Even the translation can’t do much about them, but what goes on in the Game is really quite interesting, a form of explaining the situation of the Trisolarans.
What follows is sarcasm based on the first book: You watch the intellectual elites, both the horrifically traumatized one and the rich slimeball, decide that they’d rather humanity be wiped out or dominated than be left to the whims of the lower classes, who will cut down entire forests and destroy ecosystems in order to get enough money to survive right now.
If nothing in the book rings out to you, I understand. It’s hard to connect with a character in a situation that you’ve never been in, especially when that character is utterly helpless, and without any way to escape. You’re going to have a strong anti-sympathetic reaction, which may be what’s going on here. A gut-deep “Why didn’t she punch/kick/scream? I would have ripped whomever to shreds!” The TV series has to go to some lengths to create a sense that there is a way to fight.
