There’s lots of interesting looking books at the link above, but you and/or your daughter could check with the librarians at her school or at your local libraries to get more tailored recommendations by giving the names of her favorites and what she’s finding too scary or sad. Librarians LOVE to match readers with books.

Love this book but the author is terrible. He’s not Jewish yet wrote a different book about the Holocaust and has gotten into several fights over the inaccuracies therein with the HOLOCAUST MUSUEM. Like gosh, who could be the authority here? Is it the old white dude from Ireland or the museum in charge of the world their OWN HISTORY? He also wrote a book with a trans MC that’s full of deadnaming. So…one GREAT book and two super problematic ones.

I loved some of her earlier books but I couldn’t get into this one and then I read that there was a claim of plagiarism/intellectual property violation around the game featured in the book. Definitely worth googling. The woman who created that game, Brenda Romero, even got the added insult of having her husband named in the acknowledgments of the book (he’s also a game creator). So disappointing that a book centering women and how they have a hard time getting recognition in gaming and it’s ripping off one of the very women it should uplift.
