I’d understand why that guy left her. He probably didn’t even cheat or maybe they weren’t really a thing.

I think Mary had successfully brainwashed him that he will live a better life in the Philippines and that will be ‘‘their’’ home. Hence why he felt like he didn’t need to worry about looking into the laws of ownership.
