You definitely wouldn’t be a fan of American Psycho.
That being said, despite the gore it is a brilliantly written satire. And if you “get it”…the book is hilarious.
“I felt like there was no real point of this story and everything felt irrelevant.”
I honestly believe this could be said about every work of fiction ever written. They’re all just made-up stories with no real “point.”
Unless you specifically read satire fiction, which is designed to be a commentary on society, or *maybe* historical fiction (though accurate historical fiction is very difficult to find)…most fiction books are written to entertain, not to have some big *point*
It just depends on who’s reading it and they’re opinion of it. Luckily, we have millions of books to choose from. And readers may find a “point” in other books they read.
I have DNF’d a lot of books after reading the first line. Either it grabs me at that moment or it doesn’t.
But that’s not to say the books were bad, it’s just my mood at the time. I’ve picked up the same books at other times and the first line does grab me, and sometimes I ended up loving the book.
