Marco Fogg and Kitty Wu, two of the main characters in Moon Palace by Paul Auster. They really resonated with me when I read it at age 20 and were still very relevant when re-reading it several years later.
Fogg failing to furnish his apartment and instead using heaps of boxes filled with an inherited library that slowly dwindles as he’s selling off the books. His time living hand to mouth and how that affects his psyche and physique. It’s amazing and likely autobiographical.
Kitty Wu is such a solid character. She feels very real.
Thoroughly recommend reading it. It has other depths of course and other distinct parts to the story and while I love those bits too, this section of the story is quite amazing.
