Fun fact: the author is the ex-husband of a friend of mine.

I remember being in a bookstore with my friend (they/them) and seeing them staring at a row of bookshelves where My Absolute Darling was displayed, which is when they told me their history with it.

Basically, they feel that the author based the main characters off of them, their father, and himself. They were most upset that he took the very loving relationship that they have with their dad, who is very outdoorsy but in a naturalist rather than prepper way, as inspiration for that kind of disgusting abuse.
