Because he’s not a bad guy, he just has some issues. A lot about his personality and how he relates to Eve gets explained in a conversation later in the comic, and it’ll be interesting to see if they adapt that in the series.
He truly does love Eve, he just doesn’t know how to relate to her most of the time or even be the father she deserves.
