I have two. The Ritual and Drowning.

The Ritual is pure smut. 61 chapters and every one contains a graphic, demeaning sex scene. I’m convinced the author was an adult film screenwriter and decided to try their hand at writing a novel. There isn’t a single likable character in this book.

Drowning isn’t a great work of literature. I felt that the characters were very two-dimensional. I hated how naive the author made the protagonist. It made me have a lack of sympathy for her. The ending was series finale of Dexter bad.

The Witch King by Martha Wells was the most disappointing. I love her Murderbot series but this was meandering, confusing, and had one too many things going on.

The worst was Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I find myself getting annoyed at every “Romantasy” book that is marketed as a fantasy with romance when really they’re romance books with a sprinkle of fantasy. And not a well thought out fantasy at that.

I’ve been trying to give The Witch King a fair shot… usually I try to get at least 100 pages in because many books have hooked me after an unimpressive first part, but I honestly can’t force myself to get to 50.

I think Maas’ Throne of Glass series balances this well. The first book is a little weak because she was so young when she wrote it but the books after are fun IMO. It felt more fantasy with your typical steamy scenes sprinkled in, but they felt earned. Or I have terrible taste!
