Both Euphoria and BoJack discuss mental health issues and substance abuse (mainly coming from the main character). Does anyone know of other shows like that?
shameless is a good one, just be weary if youve grown up with any parental figure with alcohol issues or abandonment/neglect
Fleabag!
“Please like me” on Netflix for a warm-hearted, comedic take on mental health, adhd and depression
You’re The Worst, absolutely love that show. I found it when I was browsing for shows with similar themes to Bojack
Check out undone. Some of the same people from bojack made it. Didn’t get the same traction, and it’s a very different show, but definitely worth the watch.
Watch Big Mouth. It doesn’t go into substance abuse much, but it has quite profound mental health and philosophical metaphors/themes among lots of hilarious crude humor and comic discomfort. Very relatable for teens and young adults.
Also, the spin-off, Human Resources, is absolutely gold. It’s less absurd and more cerebral. Heavily works with the concept of addiction, but in a way that the main characters are personified emotional fragments of the human’s minds. I.e Logic is battling to help Emotion see that her abusive boyfriend, Addiction, is a POS.
I will say there are some dark moments where relapse is implied. What makes this show unique is that they keep some absurdity with it even during gut-wrenching moments (some were very moving as a recovered addict).
The way they portray the fear and isolation and desperation… the show is certainly underrated.
Barry is a really good show about a guy who is pretty mentally broken and trying to be good but ends up hurting a lot of people. It has that mix of humor and seriousness to it.
You can try Neon Genesis Evangelion. I don’t know if you are into anime but believe me it’s worth it. The psychological and psychotic scenes in the show. The meaning behind every mental illness in every character and the amount of things to find out about the smallest details is just amazing. I really recommend it. After the series you can watch the movie End Of Evangelion which is a marvelous movie. The show and the movie are both on Netflix
Moral Orel, but it’s the main character’s dad who has the drinking problem. It’s got the same contrasting styles of lighthearted absurdism and bleak nihilism that Bojack has. Genius piece of media.
I recently got into Moral Orel and it’s gone very high on my list of shows I love. I’m so sad that we never got the whole experience as the writers intended because of the cancellation :( Kind of the same thing that happened to Bojack. Such a shame.
I didn’t hear about this, what was the intended route for the plot of Bojack (before cancellation)?
Bojack was meant to have a couple more seasons. And because they cancelled it, they let the creators have 16 episodes in last season to try and wrap things up. I think they just decided to wrap up most of the loose ends, but you can tell some things feel a little rushed. Like for instance,I’d say that the princess Carolyn and Judah’s storyline feels rushed. I’ve seen people say that they like it that way, but to me it feels like there was meant to be more.
You’re the Worst. Definitely leans more toward the comedic side but as the show goes on it gradually begins to take itself more and more seriously and can come up with some seriously heartwrenching moments when it comes to trauma and depression
No one has said russian doll so russian doll
Doesn’t deal so much with substance abuse, but there’s a fantastic Canadian animated series called People Watching from a few years ago that you can watch on YouTube.
It’s clever, and dark, and sweet, and funny, and it gets serious about mental health and depression in ways I’ve seen very few shows pull off. Would strongly recommend.
Insatiable all tho, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea because of EDs. Patty does gives of BPD vibes
Very different tone but Crazy Ex-Girlfriend deals with mental health issues very well and is super entertaining.
Agreed! It’s my third favorite show.
Shameless
OOOOO yeah but if you have real trauma in your childhood from drugs/alcohol fucking prepare yourself. I couldn’t finish the series
