The spell is clearly some sort of filter, with the red light still getting through. So presumably the trees still get enough light to go through photosynthesis.

EDIT: Looking it up, looks like plants get a lot of their energy from blue and red wavelengths. So I guess it’s enough red light for the trees.

It might be just a visual thing so maybe they’re still getting sunlight even if people can’t see the sun.

I think the sunlight could still makes it there, the city was cursed, so the spectrum of visible light is altered, and seeing that this is a fictional story I can accept bullshit science/logic a long as it does a decent job trying to sound legit

You’re watching a show that has interstellar wars, cosmic creatures and Abraham Lincoln being an immortal super hero that fights crime. And you’re perplexed how the trees are still growing in a zone that was casted into darkness. Good point, I also question how they work

So if I had to make a guess, I’d say that the magic dome is a very powerful illusion. As far as we know there isn’t much refuting the idea that the sunlight is still getting through, the people inside simply can’t see it, like a giant pair of sunglasses. If there were vampires I’d wager they might still be unable to go out during the day, but this would confirm or disprove my hypothesis.

On a slightly less related note, bees. Bees and VERY good at telling time. So if the light still feeds the trees, the bees are also probably still populating them.
