Why would I hate Diane? She tries so hard and sometimes fails. Even her worst decisions emanate from trying to do good and the despair of failure (failures that are often built into systems of civilization and power structures and that are not her fault).
She reminds me of a quote from House: “It’s possible to believe in something and still fail to live up to it.” She tries and tries but tires out. And finally, once she is OK (on meds, exercising self-care), she self-actualizes. Her story arc feels like a blueprint for how self-righteous people pleasers can grow into happier, emotionally well-regulated adults.
she’s not a people-pleaser. self-righteousness and people pleasing are kinda mutually exclusive. she deliberately stirs shit as much as she can out of self-righteousness.
