nolans actions and what he actually wants for himself and his son are very different things. is it possible that he knew saying things like debbie was a “pet” would drive mark away. because more than he hated having to possibly leave his life on earth he hated the idea that his son would have to experience that too? and so just half assed the attempt to convince him?

At the time, Nolan was genuinely trying to convince Mark, but he was more or less reading from a script. It wasn’t until the very last moment that he finally realized that everything he said was a lie and could never go through with his mission.

is it possible that he knew saying things like debbie was a “pet” would drive mark away.

He wasn’t calling Debbie a pet as a means of belittling her, but simply comparing their relationship to one a human might have with a pet relative to their lifespans.
