I have a co-worker who pays $3200 for one toddler (full day) and one elementary school aged kid (before and after school care). This is more than 50 percent of her gross earnings where we work. I think it’s madness and I wish I enjoyed children more, clearly running a daycare is a profitable enterprise in the US at least. This is in the PNW region.

No, it really isn’t very profitable. There are huge fixed expenses. Rent, rules about ratios for teachers to children, insurance, crazy liability. Teachers need to be paid so they can also live reasonably in the area. My 2 kids go to a non profit daycare in Seattle part time for over 4k. Childcare in this county is in crisis and it’s not bc providers are raking it in. There are not enough daycare slots per child—more would open if it made you rich.
