Literally any book that you now dislike due to school. This also applies to other literature styles as well.
Mine is The Hunger Games. I had to read it las year in school and it drove me insane. We started doing the novel study in early February and didn’t finish until May. I finished the book in less than two weeks, so I was pretty much just reading personal books all through English class for close to two months.
It’s not even like we had to analyze it super intensely. It was projects like ‘Make a playlist for a character of your choice’ and we had vocabulary tests every week, that were a joke. It was multiple choice for words like quest and forage. I know that English wasn’t everyone’s first language but come on.
I didn’t even like the book that much in the first place, so all of this was just adding to the misery.
The Scarlet Letter. I loved this book and read it over the weekend. Our teacher, Sherry Ranstrom (beeee speeeecific) took all of the meaning out of it with her ham handed analysis over the next two months.
Of course I’ve forgotten all about it.
I felt like I was one of the only people who honestly enjoyed The Scarlet Letter when I had to read it in high school during the summer. But it was also challenging for me as I couldn’t have any distractions while reading it or else I would lose my concentration. I was the type to listen to music while reading while also riding in a car going somewhere. But I had to sit in complete silence while reading that book.
It wasn’t the most enjoyable experience reading it initially because of that, but after finishing it I would go back and read a random paragraph here and there as I liked the unique use of language in it. I can definitely understand why so many disliked the book though.
Came here to say this. I LOATHE this book. Had to read it again in college and hated it again. I hope it fades away from our collective, societal memory and becomes a lost book
I have to admit that although I like it in a lot of ways it tends toward irrelevance and there are better books for the modern world.
