I like Amber in the show. I entirely get her anger at being lied to about it for so long and I don’t really get the hate she gets in a lot of online discussions about the show because of it. Does anybody else feel similar or am I missing a serious flaw about her character?
i think her dialogue in episode 7 is what’s hated , not her per se . no one had any major problem with her until that point .
Nah the fact that she expected him to tell when they where together for less than a year is wild to me because it doesn’t just affect her it affects everyone in his life leta say she get mad at one goes to a frat party get a lil to much to drink and starts spilling his secret identity now all his friends family everyone that goes to there school future job are now potentially at risk
Agree. Ngl I ditched this sub after S1 bc I got tired of seeing all the hate w misogynistic rhetoric being used in the process, or a general lack of empathy for differing perspectives, or blaming the character as a person rather than just a flaw in the writing?
Glad to see the sub came back on my feed to see this post
Naw even if she had not brought up knowing his secret. I did not like that break up just to go oh hey your dad whooped your ass do you need a hug
Having just read the comics, and seen the show so far, seems to me the whole point of amber and mark’s relationship is seeing two emotionally immature people struggle, then grow. Eventually they both realize that love will never solve the fundamental issue at the core of their relationship.
Along the way they do a lot of shitty teenage/college stuff :). Many actual human adults don’t have the empathy or maturity either show or comic Amber have, or Mark.
Actually, the point is to show how distant Mark to many regular humans. That’s why he had better relationship with Eve because she understand him better, and she is different from regular people.
Exactly. Comic!Amber could not keep up with Mark’s superhero life, sometimes literally. One time, Mark had to fly fast to another part of the world and tried bringing Amber along but because she was only human and had to be carried, she suffered asphyxiation from the fast trip.
Mark became too much for her and Amber couldn’t become enough for him.
I think there are two levels to this: One is the superhuman v. normal person side, which a few comments here have hit on. Absolutely these are what I would call “comic” reasons they don’t work out. The second has nothing to do with powers or not. This is the way they relate emotionally about the superhero stuff.
The last panel with them deciding to break up is beautiful from an emotional maturity level for both of them. Mark shows up to tell Amber he can’t be what she needs, and he feels it just isn’t fair for him to even ask her to accept what a life with him demands. Instead of some terrible response, she agrees. Set against both of them at least emotionally cheating on the other prior to this conversation this exchange is… refreshing.
You have two relatively adult people seeing a rift that cannot be solved between them. And instead of trying to make this into a fight (after some rough spots), they are able to recognize the problem and realize it has no solution. In the comic the root issue IS superhero related, but you could switch this to some other root cause and the beauty of the resolution remains. Desire to have kids, differing views of relationship roles, career ambitions, etc… You could have a root problem in many ways, and the scene shows both Amber and Mark have the awareness of themselves and the other person to see there is no resolution.
Yeah, maybe I read too much into it, but the underlying message is actually great. I wish more people had the ability to see when a relationship is just doomed despite love, and agree to move on in way that leaves both people able to appreciate and care for the other, but still move on to something healthier.
Well, I agree. I just mostly look on characters in different media’s as tools or gears for a plot.
I’ve said it one in another post but I’m kinda lazy today hahahahaha
The point is she has an interesting plot in the comics. It doesn’t make sense to do that plot with THIS Amber. You know what I mean?
There is more: In my opinion, they should have broke up that time. But they got together after Amber saw Mark’s fight on TV. That’s where they should broke up since the plot I mentioned doesn’t fit the Amber of the show. They didn’t do it.
I can’t keep arguing without spoilers, so I’m gonna stop. But there is 2 arguments on why this Amber character hits different. It’s not a “design” problem.

nah frl like it’s not that deep. if you can’t understand her point of view that’s rlly weird.

I agree. I understand people not liking the part where she reveals she knew since it makes some previous behavior a bit weird, but I still find her generally likable. I do feel like some of the hate for the character is a bit intense.

eh, she’s just not super interesting to me as a character compared to the others. she was fine for me up until the university part cause it just didn’t really make any sense? plus it felt like weak drama that could’ve been written better
season 2 amber is a step in the right direction, she feels like more of a good character by just a bit. less snobby and more humble and warm.
