My worst example was the word GIF pronounced like the peanut butter instead of properly as in Graphical. It’s worse because Amanda Montell was writing a linguistics book about the history of language and words.
Recent example was “eschew” which is pronounced Eh-shoo but the narrator said “Eskew” and it confused me so much I had to Google it to make sure I hadn’t been saying it wrong my whole life. What exmaples have you found?
The original audio book of “The Martian” had two computer terms pronounced very wrong. ASCII, correctly ‘ass-key,’ was pronounced ‘A-S-C-two.’ And the person who ran the computers on the Earth to Mars ship, the sysop, should have been pronounced ‘sis-op’. Short for System Operator. Instead we got ‘cy-sop.’
The book had to be re-recorded for some sort of rights reasons, and both errors were fixed in the second version.
Are you talking about the original narrator? Wil Wheaton did the second version and he was much worse, mispronouncing multiple words throughout (as he tends to do in every book he narrates).
I liked the original version a lot better
The original was a good audiobook, but I noticed both of the errors in computer terms because my computer history goes back to the 1980s. I didn’t catch Wheaton mispronouncing other words, but I still trip sometimes over words I’ve seen written but not heard pronounced.
