Season 2 isn’t terrible but it’s not great. They have too many plot threads and too many characters without a real understanding of what the threat is.
For example, season 1 set up Omni Man as the ominous threat waiting to destroy the earth. Each episode drove us a little bit closer to that final confrontation of him vs everything earth can throw at him with little chance of succeeding. Each episode had its own story but it carefully crafted Omni Mans threat into the story.
Season 2 is splitting the baby. We have Angstrom who is supposed to be this seasons bad guy but we hardly see him and hardly understand how much of a threat he is supposedly supposed to be. Then we have the viltrumite empire which is a threat. Then we have Omni man and whatever it is he is doing. Instead of trying to spend each precious minute driving all these plots forward, we spend unholy amounts of time on his sex life, college life and his mom just walking around being sad. Here are all the plot threads they currently have going
-Allen the Alien and apparent corruption on coalition of planets -Allen being half dead -Viltrumite disruption and the new viltrumites they introduced.
-Atom Eve doing who knows what -Martian invasion incoming? -Angstrom doing stuff -Omni man in different galaxy -Debbie dealing with grief -Mauler twin doing what? -Guardians doing what? -Martian pretending to be human -Donald being alive -Marks relationship with Amber -Cecil prepping for Omni man return -Robot and Monster Girl -Kate and Immortal and Rex…yeah -New Guardian member
In other words, this season is the Jack of all trades, master of none.
I’m not against slow burn and character development but the first season set a very distinct tone and season 2 has failed to keep up the same standard. They have so many things going on and I don’t feel like anything meaningful has happened. I don’t even know which direction we are trying to go. Season 1 has a very clear direction and I felt like each episode was closer to the big objective but season 2? No idea what we’re building up to for the final few episodes.
Is it terrible? No but it is a moderate let down compared to the first season
The majority of plot points you listed can be lumped together but YOU decided that they’re all separate for some random reason
Plus only 3 episodes are out right now, at this point in the first season it had a similar level main plot development It’s actually nearly identical in pacing
Ep 1 of both season 1 and 2 Contains an insane wtf moment that establishes the main villain for the season(s1 at the end of the episode s2 at the start)
Ep 2 of both season 1 and 2 Introduces teen team/new members of guardians of the globe respectively
Establishes season subplot A
Ep 3 of both season 1 and 2 Expands upon GotG members characterization
Introduces 2 more subplots for the season
Season 1 was a master of one thing, Omniman. You’re right currently it is a Jack of all trades but a master of none but by the end of the season it’ll be a Jack of trades and a matter of all
Couldn’t disagree more. I’d say S2 is already better than S1 and that episode 3 is the best episode of the series so far.
Solid agree, not nearly as captivating as the first season so far. First season really had me connected with characters, whereas this season is kind of everywhere and leaves my head spinning. The focus on romance is a trope many shows are guilty of and draws away from the main story. Not quite sure what the central conflict of the story is yet. Of course, we still have five episodes left, but all of your points are in my eyes valid criticism that I’ve been thinking as well.
Definitely too many storylines going on. They’re not flushing out any of them, seems very scattered so far.
Season 2 is bad in comparison to Season 1 in every regard. There is no way around it.
It lacks the focus, it jumps off from one plot after another, it tries to be grander in shorter format. Actually, the point it being it tries too hard and resolves nothing.
