In my opinion that is
Most will still thoroughly enjoy it as it is the most eventful episode yet, but as someone who holds the comic very dearly I can’t stop feeling there were plenty issues and missed oportunities
- Nowl-Ahn
Pretty minor, but damn it’s a missed opportunity. This was discussed on another post, it would’ve been so cool if they kept this detail and the viltrumites refered to him with this pronunciation throughtout the whole series, this kind of stuff adds to the world-building and strengthens it and it’s a shame they didn’t take full advantage of the audio-visual medium they’re now on
- The pacing
I didn’t have a problem at all with this with the first 3 episodes, but on this one I got borderline irritated. The developments on Debbie’s grief, Eve’s self-discovernment journey and Donald’s “mystery”(which is exclusive to the show) are important, but I don’t think they had much place in this episode. They’re very slow paced scenes and with a mood that doesn’t really quite mesh well with an all-out brawl in another galaxy for the fate of the planet, with those stakes I couldn’t really bother with Killcannon of all people suddenly getting the spotlight. All things considered, the whole Thraxa could’ve filled the entire episode just fine, but if they weren’t going to do that then it would’ve better to break it off with the Lizard League/Sequids simultaneous attack(which now I bet it’s gonna happen next episode, alongside Mark’s return), and that’s why so many people were theorizing about that, because it made so much more sense. An action packed episode featuring all our current heroes barely coming out on top of their respective conflicts would’ve been a great way to end the mid-season
- The many great interactions we missed
Mark getting a cheap shot on Lucan and running away was pretty amusing
Another great line we missed in the show
Finally this, man Nolan’s one-liner game was on point during this
Sorry if some of this stuff seems very trivial, but that’s just how I feel as someone very passionate about this comic, perhaps you could change my mind
Will there be another episode next week? Or is it a break until next yr?
Unfortunately this was a very bad adaptation of an episode
Gotta agree here
I’m wondering why they used Thula for this fight. In the show she was in the purge and already had grey hair which means she’s much older than Nolan. Somehow Mark almost beat her.
Yeah I was a bit disappointed that so much of this episode was dedicated to Donald. Like, yeah he has the potential to be a super interesting character. That said, c’mon man, he took necessary time away from developing the whole Thraxan story line and because of that it was rushed imo. I think that the comic version of the fight was MUCH better and I missed the little moment where Mark smacks Nolan to make sure he’s actually not a Thraxan wearing one of those suits. That said, I think the tension/dialogue of that first encounter Mark and Nolan have on Thraxa was a lot better in the show. Also I agree! I was waiting for the Nowl-Ahn thing! That was such a human moment for both of them. Thank god the sequid invasion didn’t happen this episode though.
My only truly important complaint about this episode was the animation. It was good, for invincible standards, but it’s been YEARS since season 1 I was expecting some significantly more fluid and visually appealing animation than what we got
Also episodes 1-3 had frankly terrible animation, so I was expecting that to be because they were focusing more on this fight, which would have made it acceptable, but now it just seems like poor animation is all we are going to get.
I kept thinking “man if they’re cutting this many corners we must be getting a full episode of just pure mayhem on Thraxa” but nope it’s basically just what should be the preview of the fight.
This season feels extremely rushed animation wise, I’d be perfectly happy with one season every 2 years instead of one. You can only adapt Invincible for the first time once 🤷♂️
Yeah same, the atom eve special had the best fight animation so far imo. I was hoping that would be the whole season or at least the fights. Hopefully they spent too much of the budget on whatever fights happen the last episode or two.

I’m guessing they’re chalking it up to sounding basically the same and they’ll mention it in passing later.

Pacing was a bit off in places, I’ll admit. Eve and Donald subplots could have been moved to other episodes. Loved the cuts between Debbie and Mark/Nolan, though. Disagree about the LL or Sequid plots. Those should be in the next half of the season.

Some missed interactions would have been great, but most I’m fine with them excluding. It’s an adaptation after all. You can’t cover everything and there might be specific storytelling choices behind a few exclusions.

I am never a source material purist. When I watch The Boys I’m pretty damned happy about how far they deviated from the source (which isn’t nearly as good as the show IMO). When I watch most adaptations, I don’t WANT the same story I’ve had before, I want something more fitting to the current medium, and I want something somewhat fresh with the same general characters I already love.
But with this arc in this story - from one of the best parts of one of the best comics? I wanted as much loyalty as possible. And I feel like that was delivered. There was a lot left out - this could have been two episodes. But I loved what they did cover.
Swear most comic readers will never be happy and should stop watching, after every episode there’s a mile long complaint thread nitpicky the episode to death
Lmao could you point me to what other thread in this vein has been done ? I myself said I didn’t have much issue with these past 3 episodes
I agree with some of these points, especially the subplot stuff (which I feel could have easily been moved to another episode, save the Debbie stuff which fits really well thematically with this ep)
But, I loved the Nolan and Mark stuff, especially the bit where Nolan sees the dead Thraxans. It doesn’t need to be one-to-one with the comics dialogue wise, it still worked brilliantly, JK Simmons knocked that dialogue out of the park. I also loved the fight in spite of it’s differences. I like Mark holding his own slightly better against Viltrumites.
First time the show has let me down so much
I think I’m fine with the lizard league being used only later mostly because they really need to focus heavily on Rex for that episode
Otherwise, I do agree with the others that this ep really should’ve focussed mostly on Thraxa. Or did something similar to what ep 3 did and have all the earth stuff first, and then focussed on Thraxa
But honestly, loved this ep for the most part lol. I was mostly fanboying through all of it lmao
Debbie’s grief absolutely belonged in this episode
It’s the parallel between their journeys in their two sequences of wandering around wondering who they were after those events and finding ways to move forward
That’s not pacing. That’s storytelling f that doesn’t rely on action.
It’s even hammered home with the parallels to Donald figuring out who he is in the aftermath
One of my favorite parts of the episode.
I agree with everything you said except the sequid/ lizard attack happening this episode that would feel too rushed and the pacing has already been a bit of an issue so that would make things worse but besides that I definitely agree that the Eve and Donald stuff should’ve gotten cut out and the episode should’ve just focused on Thraxa entirely
I would partially miss Lucan’s nicer personality, that’s one of the reasons why I remembvered cause he’s one of the nicer Viltrumites even before Lucan’s turn. ANd also his muscular frame. Wish they made his belly not so sagging but it is nice nonetheless. His changing due to Earth’s culture would be good to see.
