What book have you read that wasn’t subjectively “bad” but you regrets reading all the same?

For me, Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter. The book was engaging and it kept me on my toes, but I just with I hadn’t “poisoned my head” with all the graphic gore that was in there. I years later i still think about this and how I really wish I had never read it.

Question inspired by a comment /u/PrincessOfWales made in another thread :)

Alright sit down and let me tell you about a story

It involves a girl with serious generational trauma a mom who won’t shut the fuck up and a day and night and weekend job that by all accounts is deadly

That’s right its whichwood by tahereh mafi and yes i had to check 3 times to make sure i spelled the name right i read this book sometime about a year ago cause there was 3 boxes of books on the chopping block at the library as they hadn’t been checked out and some of them were my favorites so i had to take home those and about 3 dozen more that looked amazing (the lightening queen was one of them i loved that book)

the librarian had told me that they pulled ones that hadn’t been checked out in 7 years most of these weren’t even 7 years old because the former librarian who was helping out decided to over rule her request and purge the library of a bunch of great books. ☕️ lots of tea there and yes i hated the former librarian she’s a complete bitch

Now on to whichwood i loved this book i loved laylees character i loved the whole adventure i somewhat liked the additional characters honestly the whole thing was pretty great and trust me i check this was listed ordered and set as a middle schoolers book right?

And then came the very through and descriptive explanation of how to clean and box up and nail shut coffins of the dead! And let me assure you it will turn your stomach stephen king would be proud and all of this done by a girl who’s around 14 and already starting to go gray (silver but with that stress who can blame her) she’s the last of her family that does this and her dead mother is not going to let her forget it she talks so much not to mention the beautiful clothes she wears while doing this like could her family not get her some good work clothes maybe a carhart? They get ruined when she does this plus the whole town hates her cause they’re afraid of her even tho THEY NEED HER?!? But you know no good deed >! Plus there’s the whole putting her on trial thing i wanna say they wanted to burn her at the stake for that but i can’t remember anymore!<

mind you this and all its gory descriptions were all aimed at a middle school audience if i read this in middle school I’d have nightmares for weeks i was having trouble when i was 25 reading it so you know its gory the actual story and characters were fine i wanted more laylee but the content should have kicked it up a higher demographic for the graphic bits i tokd the librarian when i brought it back

Another gory gross book i read similar was three dark crowns which i believe i read right after so i was doing sucky for non violent books then i did want to read the 2nd one for 3 dark crowns tho
