You wanted to read the book, you were excited to crack it open, you came into it with good faith and anticipation… but you ended up dnf-ing it. Which book and why?

Mine was The Maid by Nita Prose. It was for my book club and looked like a fun murder mystery. Instead I got instant manic-pixie-dream-neurodivergent-girl vibes, and I noped out before the crime scene was even found.

We read this one for school otherwise I never could have. It’s notable for being the first real true crime book which I can appreciate but it’s not actually good at all

Great book to study imho; lots of interesting layers and themes, but the detail is too much for modern readers, who have limited patience for Capote’s obsessive attention to detail. Absolutely bloody fascinating study of real people in a tragic culmination of the failure of modern society to deal with its own dysfunction.
