If you decide you want some mystery and a bit of magic I’ve recently got into Leigh Bardugo’s works. I really enjoyed the Ninth House series and the Six of Crows Duology. The Shadow and Bone Trilogy were also good.

Some old school “fun and low stakes” books might include Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series or Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Dennis Taylor’s The Bobverse Trilogy is a hoot if you enjoy science fiction.

I’ve also heard that the DUngeon Crawler Carl books, by Matt Dinniman are fun, but I’ve not listened to them yet myself.

I grew up in a small community. Most of us “readers” definitely used reading to escape that existence. I found that reading sometimes prompts me into further interests. Is there a library near you where you could start a reading group to discuss the books you enjoy? You mention a language barrier, so that may be challenging. But you might be able to advertise it as giving other people a chance to speak your language. In fact, I wonder if there are groups, companies, or organizations near you who could use a native English speaker as a resource for their members to practice speaking with.

It doesn’t really seem incomprehensible to hold both the positions that (1) you like a particular work of art, film, book, etc. and (2) you think the creator is somehow flawed or is using their popularity for an unjust cause, such as taking a political stance. Rather than censoring a work or cancelling a creator it is better to bring their flaws to light and let each individual consumer make an informed choice as to whether to support their art or publically engage with them with respect to, for example, their politics.
