Perfume by Patrick Süskind was assigned during one of my lit classes. It was a weird read that I remember somewhat enjoying though it was 10+ years ago and I don’t remember what stood out to me.
Then a girlfriend at the time a few years later recommended Johnny Got His Gun and that was a tough read. I don’t think I enjoyed it much but was happy to have read it I suppose.
I’m a much more boring reader outside of these examples and maybe even those examples show that

I read the Martian then years later Project Hail Mary and then a few months after Artemis.
Loved the Martian but could not put down PHM. Artemis was certainly a slog for me at points though

The author character at one point fields a question from a reader how one of the author’s books kind of just ends with no conclusion and I remember not being stoked to finish the book after that expecting it to be the case. Tbf, it kind of had a conclusion but it also felt like it kind of just ends.
I forget the character’s name who is ostracized from his royal family but I knew nothing about the book going into it and thought I was going to be reading that characters adventures all the way through. If anyone can recommend a book about a character like that please let me know. I’m not looking to read another of Mandel’s works though.
Hah. I’m pretty much at the same point as you currently. I have seen here frequently that people say that it’s worth powering through so I’m powering through. For me it’s fluctuated between “staying up two hours later than I usually do because I can’t put it down” and “I really hope it picks back up again” a few times already
