  • And sorry to you as a Husky… I think it is even more like college football for schools like WSU, or OSU in Corvallis. You see Husky stuff in Seattle, but it isn’t EVERYWHERE. If you were to see someone wearing a Coug shirt or a Duck shirt at say, Pike Place Market, you might glance at them but you wouldn’t think THAT much about it. (You see all 4 schools represented in places like Cannon Beach - it can be a conversation starter!)

But you walk through Corvallis with a Duck jersey on, or Pullman with a Husky tshirt on, there better be a game happening. People will probably stare.

Where it differs is that members of the same family can have different allegiances (despite what I previously said) - my cousins (siblings) went to University of Oregon and Oregon State. There were two years where they were both college students as well. Both followers of football, and supporters of their universities. (They are also the first ones in the family to go to those schools). Makes for interesting sibling rivalry! On the other hand, during the Apple Cup, I root for WSU because that is where my Dad went for Grad school (although I don’t follow sports - I’m in it for the cheese, mainly. Cougar Gold is the bomb!)

  • This is a show made for Americans…

But after watching Welcome to Wrexham, I’m not sure we have quite the equivalent culturally, of how much a community involves itself with a team - and how much that team is involved with the community.

I say this living in “Seahawk/Mariner/Kraken” country with friends still deeply bitter about the loss of the Sonics and who have boycotted Starbucks ever since. It doesn’t hit quite the same, I don’t think. The Greyhounds aren’t “London and the suburbs team” it is Richmond’s. Seattle Seahawks don’t even just play for Seattle - but the Pacific Northwest if someone is going to root for the “local” team. Even so, you are going to find people in Portland, Oregon who root for a football team in the South or East Coast or California before they’d root for the Seahawks.

Maybe college teams are more equivalent - being a Husky fan or a Cougar fan tends to be a generational thing even if no one has attended those universities.

  • You’ve got your cat… you aren’t alone! (I miss my guy, with his murder mittens with such cute toe beans)

If you have Max, or a VPN that lets you watch British TV channels - Channel 4 has a show that is similar to the Great British Bake Off, the Great Pottery Throwdown.

The people are so lovely and passionate about clay! They support each other so much too. First 5 seasons are on Max. I got tired of waiting for the 6th season, and got a VPN (and figured out a London zip code) and just streamed it.

I am a hobbyist potter, so I’m slightly biased, but I got others who aren’t hooked on the show.

On Netflix is Great British Baking Show/Bake Off, and Derry Girls.
